Personality.

Among the Marauders, Remus was always known as the ‘mature one’ as he never partook in the bullying. It was this level of maturity that allowed him to become a Prefect his Fifth Year. However, his greatest flaw was what kept him from making Head Boy – Remus likes to be liked, and therefore, could never (and still can’t) force himself to reprimand or punish his friends when they needed it. Despite being exposed to prejudice his entire life, he is extremely forgiving and can always see the good in people. He is intelligent, calm, good-natured, gentle, and incredibly tolerant. He has a dry wit and a sarcastic sense of humor to match.

Appearance.

Remus has light-brown hair that already has signs of possibly starting to gray even though he has not even hit twenty yet. He is young and relatively handsome, though during times of the full moon he can look pale and sickly. He has gentle features and a tender ‘charming’ smile (though not the same type of charming smile that Sirius had). Due to his poverty, his clothing is not of the best condition, though he never complains about it and seems quite content with what he has.

Background.

Remus Lupin was born into a mixed blood family. His father was a pureblood wizard from a family that went back five generations and his mother was muggle-born. When his father got into debt, he turned to Fenrir Greyback – a werewolf who worked on the black market – for a loan, but when it was time to pay him back, the family was unable to. As payment, Greyback stalked the family the next full moon, and then attacked and cursed the one the Lupins least expected – their three year old son, Remus. Immediately, they fled and fell off of Greyback’s radar who had intended to kidnap the boy as well and raise him as his own son. Luckily, the Lupins were able to keep Remus safe from Greyback, but not from his curse.

Despite taking him to every doctor that they could afford with what little money they had, there was no cure for lyncanthrope. Remus showed signs of magic at a young age, but there was no hope of being able to attend Hogwarts, the famous wizarding school. Because they moved constantly from place to place, Remus was unable to find friends and therefore stuck to books and (small) pranks instead to keep himself entertained. When Albus Dumbledore became headmaster, however, everything changed with Remus’s acceptance into Hogwarts.

It was there that Remus met the three boys that would become his best friends for life: James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. Though Remus cared for the boys deeply, he refused to share his dark secret with them. Every full moon, he would leave the confines of the school to disappear beyond the Whomping Willow (a tree that actually fought back!) and follow a tunnel into the Shrieking Shack where he would be safe to transform into a fully grown werewolf – safe for everybody else, but nobody could keep Remus safe from himself. Without any prey to feast upon, the werewolf would turn upon itself, attacking and scratching itself all over for the taste of blood that it so craved.

His friends could not fail to notice his disappearance every month. He told all sorts of lies (“My mother is ill and I must go home to see her.”), but eventually they were able to figure out the truth. Instead of abandoning him as he had feared, they instead worked to become Animagi to keep him company every full moon. With animals to keep him company, the werewolf felt no need to attack himself and therefore it made the transformations much more bearable. The four boys together took on the name The Marauders, and together they pulled pranks, discovered secret passages, and mapped out Hogwarts as a whole.

Remus became a Prefect in Fifth Year, much to the other Marauders chagrin. Despite his duties, however, afraid of losing their friendship, he often let James and Sirius go with a warning only every time they would break a rule (which they did quite often). To make up for his reluctance to get people into trouble, Remus took his other duties as Prefect very seriously – such as tutoring the younger kids, which he came to have not only a knack for but a passion for as well.

In Sixth Year, things became strained between the Marauders when Sirius pulled a prank that involved Remus. Severus Snape, long-term enemy and rival of the Marauders, was told by Sirius how to get past the Whomping Willow and that beyond the tunnel, he would find where Remus went every month. He had always been very curious about where Remus went, so he took the bait and went. Before he could get to the end where he would meet a fully grown werewolf, however, James heard of what Sirius had done and pulled him back, probably saving his life. Remus had never been so furious in his life.

After Hogwarts, it was impossible for Remus to find work because of what he was even though he was more qualified than half the people that were being hired all around him having gotten on an O on almost every single one of his NEWTS (Potions being of the worst where he got an A). Dumbledore took pity on him (or that’s how Remus saw it anyway) and offered him a full time job in the Order of the Phoenix, an organization meant to fight against the rising Dark Lord Voldemort. The Order did not pay, however, and it was James who paid – gave – Remus the needed money to survive.
